History of the Springfield Symphony Chorus

NikkiStoia holidayThe Springfield Symphony Chorus was founded in the 1944-1945 concert season to join the one-year old Springfield Symphony Orchestra in its performance of Brahms' "Schicksalslied" on April 22, 1945. The Chorus has performed continuously since then with the Orchestra as well as in its own performances. The chorus was originally under the directorship of Alexander Leslie, the founder of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra. Today, under the baton of Chorus Director Nikki Stoia, the 120-member chorus continues its collaboration with the SSO, as well as presenting choral recitals in the greater Springfield area, and other venues.

Join the Springfield Symphony Chorus!

We are always looking for more singers to join our ranks. If you live in the western to central Massachusetts or northern Connecticut area and are interested in singing, we’d love to hear from you!

Auditions are scheduled each year in late summer and early winter. There may be additional auditions in the year as needed. Auditions are not painful; we simply want to hear your voice quality and range to determine voice part and know that you can sight read music. Please bring a short piece to perform for us, preferably in one of the following languages: Latin, Spanish, Italian, German, French or Hebrew (an accompanist will be available). We will listen to a solo piece in English, but we would prefer one of the above-mentioned foreign languages, since the Chorus performs a significant amount of repertoire in languages other than English. As part of the audition process, we also ask that potential members check your calendars to ensure our rehearsal and concert schedule will fit into your schedule - please bring your personal calendar to the audition for reference.  Attendance at Springfield Symphony Chorus rehearsals and concerts is mandatory. Contact Chorus President Alicia Pronovost at apronovost@comcast.net for more information about auditioning for the upcoming 2016-2017 concert season.
