For more than 80 years, the Springfield Symphony Orchestra has been at the heart of Western Massachusetts’ cultural community, bringing world-class live music, meaningful artistic experiences, and music education to audiences of all ages.
Founded in 1944, the Springfield Symphony Orchestra performed its inaugural concert at what is now Springfield Symphony Hall. That historic performance received widespread acclaim and was even recorded by the Office of War Information for rebroadcast to American troops serving overseas during World War II. Since then, the Symphony has grown into the largest professional orchestra in Massachusetts outside of Boston and has become a cornerstone of the region’s vibrant arts landscape.
Today, the SSO is home to more than 80 exceptional musicians from across New England and Canada. Each season, the orchestra presents an exciting mix of classical masterworks, pops concerts, family-friendly programming, and special community performances that inspire, entertain, and bring people together.

Springfield Symphony Youth Orchestras
The Springfield Symphony Orchestra proudly serves as the parent organization of the Springfield Symphony Youth Orchestras, providing young musicians with exceptional ensemble training and performance opportunties.
Our youth program includes:
- Springfield Youth Camerata– An introductory string ensemble focused on developing ensemble skills and musicianship.
- Springfield Youth Sinfonia– An intermediate full orchestra that builds confidence and orchestral experience.
- Springfield Youth Orchestra– Our premier youth ensemble, offering advanced students the opportunity to perform challenging orchestral repertoire in a professional concert setting.
These ensembles provide invaluable musical experiences that complement school music programs and prepare students for future artistic success while fostering teamwork, discipline, and a lifelong love of music.
