Springfield Symphony Audacity of Hope concert celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. on January 14, 2023
Audacity of Hope marked an exceptional tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr. and the contribution of Black composers, musicians, and artists in the Classical realm. Concert attendees were treated to beautiful pieces composed by Ozie Cargile, Quinn Mason, and Kevin Scott, and had the distinct honor of their presence as the audience was uplifted by their music as a collective community. Maestro Scott led our fantastic Symphony Orchestra as guest conductor for this occasion. Artina McCain captivated the audience with her rendition of Florence Price’s Piano Concerto in D Minor, a truly showstopping moment. A first for an SSO performance, Poet Laureate Magdalena Gómez highlighted the music of the evening with an original spoken word piece entitled “The Metaphysics of Memory.”
