Springfield Symphony Youth Orchestra Presents

Season Finale Concert Sunday May 21

Professional-Level Performance Wraps Up Season

with Four Outstanding Soloists

The Springfield Symphony Youth Orchestras (SSYO), already comprised of seasoned young musicians, will perform their final concert in their season series on Sun., May 21, 2017. The Season Finale Concert showcases the professionalism that this young group of musicians has achieved, and features four outstanding young soloists who have been selected through the SSYO’s annual Concerto Competition.

The 140 student musicians of the Springfield Symphony Youth Orchestra (SSYO), who will be performing in their Finale Concert on May 21 at Springfield Symphony Hall, are as accomplished and polished as their professional name-sakes.

The SSYO held its annual Concerto Competition on Jan. 17 to select the most outstanding musicians from each of the two orchestras that make up the Youth Orchestra: the introductory Youth Sinfonia (SYS) and the more advanced Youth Orchestra (SYO). Adjudicated by members of the professional Springfield Symphony Orchestra, members of the youth orchestra compete for a chance to perform a piece for solo instrument backed by their peers during the season finale concert.

This season, two winners were selected from each ensemble, a result that hasn’t happened for more than 10 years. The winners for the SYS are

  • Amelia Wray, who will perform the first movement, “Allegro moderato” of Joseph Haydn’s Concerto in G Major and
  • Nolan Saito performing the first movement, “Allegro” of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Concerto No. 4 in D Major.

The winners for the SYO are

  • Alice McDonald, who will perform the second movement, “Adagio” of  Gerald Finzi’s Clarinet Concerto Op. 31 and
  • Vivienne Yang, performing the first movement, “ Allegro molto moderato” of  Edvard Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor Op. 16.

The SYO, conducted by Jonathan Lam, and the SYS, conducted by Marsha Hassett, will be performing classical pieces by well-known composers in their Season Finale, including Mozart, Strauss Jr. and Stravinsky.

“Come join SYS in a celebration of the classical concerto with works by Haydn and Mozart.  We'll frame these well-known violin concerti with a delightful quodlibet by Johann Strauss, Jr. and a march from the ballet, "Sylvia” by Delibes,” said Ms. Hassett.

Concert goers will be treated to a professional level concert that is an ideal educational family event and are sure to grow in appreciation and knowledge of orchestral music.

Musicians for the Youth Orchestra, who went through a rigorous audition to obtain their spots, as well as weekly comprehensive rehearsals, range in ages from 8 – 18 years old, hailing from 29 cities and towns in the Pioneer Valley and beyond.

The Season Finale program on May 21 begins at 3 p.m. at Springfield Symphony Hall, 34 Court St., Springfield, Mass., and the orchestras will perform:
